Pro Bono Day for Legal Help

The economic downturn has had and will continue to have a significant impact on the residents of Baltimore City and beyond, particularly those in low-income communities. The dramatic increase in the demand for legal assistance from civil legal services organizations statewide is a telling indicator of just how serious the situation has become for many individuals and families. Unfortunately, the demand for these services far outweighs the resources available.

In response to this need, the Bar Association of Baltimore City (BABC), in partnership with Maryland Legal Aid, Legal Services for the Elderly, the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, and the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, is hosting its third Pro Bono Day on Saturday, October 30, from 10 am to 2 pm at Maryland Legal Aid’s downtown Baltimore office, 500 East Lexington Street. The last two Pro Bono Days, held in October, 2009 and May, 2010, each served well over 100 people with more than 140 legal issues. Organizers of this event expect and encourage more people to take advantage of the free legal assistance.

Participants can discuss their legal issues one-on-one with volunteer lawyers in a variety of areas, including landlord-tenant, government benefits, veterans issues, bankruptcy and consumer debt, wills, advance directives and elder law, foreclosure prevention, and divorce/custody/child support.

The event is free and open to the public. Your assistance in getting the word out to your constituency/members, via the attached flyer, would be greatly appreciated. The bill would allow certain bars within a given area to continue serving alcohol until 3 am, and allow patrons to continue consuming it until 4 am. It's Snow Time Again In Baltimore!

The City of Baltimore is expected to be hit with another snow storm beginning Friday afternoon, February 05, 2010. Forecasters predict that snow will fall through early Saturday evening and significant accumulations are expected.

The City of Baltimore wants to assure residents that its top priority will be to clear primary and secondary roadways. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use extreme caution while traveling this weekend, as slippery conditions may exist. Citizens should also prepare to remove their vehicles from designated snow emergency routes, as Phase Two of the City's Snow Emergency Plan will be implemented at 6:00 this evening.

The Parking Authority of Baltimore City would like to notify residents in Federal Hill, Fells Point and Little Italy that they will be able to park their vehicles in neighborhood City-owned parking facilities during the upcoming snow emergency. Parking is free in these garages effective today and throughout the snow emergency, and is available on a 'first come, first served’ basis. Parking your cars in these garages will assist the City with its snow removal efforts.

No alley pick ups due to snow and ice conditions

Department of Public Works Director, David E. Scott, announced today that until further notice, rear alley collections will be moved to the front. Citizens who normally have rear collection for their trash and recycling are asked to place containers in the front of their residences.

Director Scott explained that, "Due to the heavy snowfall over the weekend, alleys with snow and ice present unsafe conditions for our drivers. Until we can safely resume rear collections, we are asking citizens to place their trash and recycling out in front so our crews can pick them up. We appreciate their cooperation during these unique circumstances."
